A4 Tuesday, February 14, 2017 albany GazeTTe-Times 1 KYLE ODEGARD Albany Democrat-Herald Linn County high schools performed well at the OSAA Cheerleading State Cham- pionships, held at Memo- rial Coliseum in Portland on Saturday, with Sweet Home, Lebanon and Central Linn placing and South Albany winning its second straight title. The Rebels won the 5A trophy with a whopping 204.40 points. The sec- ond-place team scored 183.80. South margin of victory was the largest of any of the category at the championships, and the Rebels had the sec- ond-highest score of the day, regardless of classifi- cation. In 2016, South Albany High School also won the 5A crown, and the team fin- ished second in the 5A Small classification in 2015.

Sweet Home took second place in the 4A category with 175.60 points and just missed out on back-to-back championships, as well. The team was narrowly out- pointed by champion Glad- stone, which had a score of 175.80. The Huskies took first place in the 4A Large cate- gory in 2016, fourth place in 4A in 2015 and second place in 4A in 2014. Lebanon finished third in the Coed Large category. The Warriors are another team been strong in recent years, as the squad took fourth place in the 5A Small category in 2016 and 2015 and fifth place in the Large standings in 2014.

Central Linn took third place in the 3A standings this year. A feature story on South Albany High cheerleading team will ap- pear later this week in the Democrat-Herald. was born in Dryad, Wa i ton, on Oct. 15, 1919, to Charles Frederick and Inez Mary (Everington) Allison, both of whom emigrated from England to the United States. Bert and his older brother Rex grew up in Dryad and attended Lewis County schools. father, Charles, was a logger his entire life, and Bert never envisioned any occupation other than following in his footsteps. Bert loved the woods and, other than for his World War II service in the United States Navy, spent his entire working life as a logger.

He was an accomplished spar tree high lead climber and rig- ger and loved driving the during his years working at the Snow Peak Lumber Company. Bert, with a keen intel- lect, had the opportunity to attend Washington State on an scholarship upon gradua- tion with honors from high school at the age of 15. In- stead, choice was to marry his childhood sweet- heart, Dorothy June Baker, on June 1, 1940, as soon as she graduated from Pe Ell High School, and pursue his logging ambitions. Two daughters, Dixie and Patty, were born during the first years of Bert and marriage. Bert set chokers in Ryderwood, Washington, until his brother-in-law convinced him that Lebanon was the place to be for logging.

Al- though Bert was offered a deferment as World War II continued unabated, he decided that it was time for him to enlist in the United States Navy. After serving as a mate in 1944 and 1945 aboard the USS Otus in the South Pacific and Philippines and upon his discharge in 1946, Bert returned to Lebanon and logging. Bert and Dorothy started a second family including Brian, Scott and Melissa Allison in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They were active members of Leba- Our Lutheran Church during this period. Bert was a proud member of the International Wood- workers of America until 1968, when he assumed a management position at Snow Peak.

He was always true to his union affiliation and Democratic leanings throughout his life. He lost his wife Dorothy to cancer in 1976, which with three children increased his on- going responsibilities. Al- though he ready to retire from logging, man- datory retirement led to the end of his logging career in 1984. Bert enjoyed his mem- berships in the Lebanon Masons East Linn Lodge 44, the Scottish Rite in Sa- lem, the Al Kader Shriners in Wilsonville, the Lebanon BPOE 1663, and the Lebanon American Legion Post.
