Dale finished fifth in 2:18.03 and Pettit sixth in 2: 16.21 in the 200 individual medley, and Dale was fifth in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.43. Corvailis' Tiedeman placed 11th in the 100 freestyle in a lifetime best time of 58.56, Lori Haynes was ninth in the 50 freestyle iiv a lifetime best 26.32 and the 400 freestyle relay team of Laila Deardorff, Cathy Wright, Brigitte Rossbacher and Haynes was ninth in 4:00.3. Philomath's Rhonda Flatz placed fifth in diving with 301.15 points and Crescent Valley's Mary OToole followed her in eighth The Raiders' Michelle Tomc-zuk placed 10th in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.7. In the boys' meet, Corvailis' Rolf Sjogren placed sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2 :04.06 ajid llth in the 100 butterfly in 56.72, Gregg Tiedeman placed eighth in the 100 breastroke in 1:03.94 and 11th in the 50 freestyle in 23.25, Lynn Villemyer placed 12th in the 500 freestyle in 5:13.21, and Terry Davis placed 10th in diving with 2S2.05 points. Crescent Valley's Mike Frank placed ninth in diving with 256.5 points.

Obitz said the only real disappointment for her girls' team was Tiedeman in the 50 freestyle, where she hit a lane line in her qualifying heat Friday and failed to get in the top 12. The Spartan coach said Tiedeman could 've been in the top six in that event. Philomath boys' coach Paul Mariman said Flatz' consistency was the key to her diving performance. "She dove' very well and was as consistent as she's been in any competition all year," he said. Flatz agreed.

"Some girls hit some dives really well, but I was consistent all the way through," she my State Farm's New Miremet It can help you set a portion of your income aside now for future enjoyment free from current Income tax. fndfrraJ Mwty By Brest Eggers For The Gaiette-Time GRESHAM The Corvailis High girls' swim team climbed another notch on the state swimming ladder for a fifth-place finish at the Oregon Interschob.stic Swimming and Diving Championships at Mt. Hood Community College Saturday. The fifth-place finish was an improvement over last year's sixth placing and was the highest finish ever for a Corvailis or District 8 school in the state meet. David Douglas won the girls title by scoring 1 points and was followed by Lake 102; North Eugene, 88; Corvailis, 80 and North Bend, 75.

Philomath scored 10 points and Crescent Valley eight points in the girls meet. Cottage Grove upset David Douglas to win the boys' competition, scoring 166 points to '156 for the Scots. The Corvailis boy's scored 22 points to finish 18th for the second consecutive year, while Crescent Valley scored four points. "We scored a lot more points (25 more) than last year, so I guess I can't complain about that," said Corvailis girls' coach Judy Obitz when asked about her team's performance. The Corvailis girls 200 medley relay team was thwarted in its bid for a state championship, but it took a state record by David Douglas' relay to do it.

The Seots broke Wilson's -state record of 1:56.14 set in last year's meet by swimming the event in 1:55.57 to defeat the Spartans, who were also under the existing record in a lifetime best of 1:56.11. The same Corvailis team of Kersti Pettit, Schuller, Carrie Dale and Kelly Tiedeman also finished second and were under the state record in last year's meet. "The girls really wanted to win the medley, but David Douglas is so tough and we improved our time so there's not much you can say," said Obitz. The highest individual finish for the Sparts was Pettit's GIANT BUILDER'S GARAGE SALE Coming -Sot. Sun.

March 3 4 back one-and-a-half, which I failed at district and beat my best 11 dives' score by 90 points. One of my goals has to make the top six, and I made it" There is no official AA state swim meet so Philomath competes in the AAA meet. And the Warriors' were the only AA school to score In the meet with their 10 points due to Flatz's effort. Crescent Valley girls' coach Caron Shake was equally pleased with OToole, a senior, and in her first year of diving. "For trying a new sport for the first time and then to place eighth in state is something.

I couldn't ask for much more." Corvailis boys' coach Jeff Storie was disappointed his 200 medley relay team was disqualified in the Friday's prelims, but saw progress in his program. 'We had to taper for Friday's meet just to get our swimmers in Saturday's meet," he said. "Next year we should be fairly strong and able to concentrate on Saturday's meet a little more," Storie said his medley felay team would have placed eighth in Saturday's consolation finals with it's Friday time. The Corvailis girls' team loses only Deardorff and Schuller to graduation and the future looks bright. Rossbacher's a junior; Pettit, Dale, Tiedeman and Wright are sophomores; and Haynes is a freshman.

But Obitz said the biggest reason for a bright future is the building of the Corvailis Aquatic Center. "With a new pool in and if our swimmers swim a lot over the summer, we should 4m--prove a lot," she said. "JVben you consider that we swim an hour and 15 minutes a day and every other team that finished ahead of us swims at least three hours a day, we do pretty well. When I tell the other coaches this they are shocked that we do as well as we do." FOR DETAILS SEE OR CALL: DAVE SMITH 901 N.W.
