Corf Ttv Co-oBt tooy. hwr 199 1 1 Roy Gault Harshman puts the Beavers on hold Marv Harshman didn't like what he law Saturday night at Gilt Coliseum. "I thought there was a lot of Incompetency on the court, and aome of it was the players uld the University of Washington basketball coach. But Harshman wasn't referring to the players, Hit reference wai to Frank Bucklewici, Ron Labetich and Willis McJunkln. "I was In favor of going to a third official," uld Harshman, "but you have to have some consistency.

We haven't had any consistency from our officials this year." Harshman wasn't complaining that the officials had cost him the game, a 75-68 loss to Oregon State. But be felt he could have gotten a few more breaks than he got. "We have to find some guys who have the character to go out and call the game the same In this town and that town and the other town, and we're probably not going to find them," said Harshman. "It's a percentage thing. Ninety-nine percent of the time In the subconscious and I'm not saying there's any one guy who is going to try to put the shaft to a team but they're going to make the call In favor of the Rome team.

They won't stand up against the fans. I see it happen on my own borne court And I see the same thing happen If one team Is better than the other. They always give the call to the better team. That's a fact of life. They'll tell you the same thing In the pros." Jut A 1 :.7 r.

v-v -J 1 defense, and frankly, I didn't see what Marv said he saw. But Harshman has always been vocal in his belief that basketball is a non-contact sport, -and he dislikes any kind of incidental contact. With Oregon no longer playing Its' Kamikaze style, Marv apparently needs a new axe to grind. "They hold us more than we hold them." said OSU guard Ray Blume. "All we did is the basic bumping to slow people down.

We both did it. I don't think we did any more than we've done before." "The Beavers don't play that type of defense," said forward-guard Dwayne Allen. "He made a false statement. There ain't no Beavers play that way. We played good defense at times tonight, but I don't think we played so bad that we had to bold a player's Poor in first half OSU Coach Ralph Miller might have taken exception to that, because the Beavers' defense was shake in the first half.

In a tone it's difficult to pin the responsibility for a breakdown on one individual, so Ralph decided to make his players more responsible. "If somebody's not going to guard a man when they have shooters like they've got, I've got to do something," Miller said. "Our ball coverage tonight was something to behold at all positions. I decided to go with a man defense and let the chips fall where they may. Until then, we certainly hadn't put any pressure on the ball." And Miller certainly didn't want to miss an opportunity to agree with Harshman on something.

When Miller was notified of Harshman's attack on the officials, he replied: "I don't blame him. I really don't. That makes two of us. I'd say we have a unanimous opinion." The most puzzling thing about the officiating is why Buckiewlcz was working the game. Each Pac-10 coach is permitted to black ball one Pac-10 official from working his games, and Miller has said his vote went to Buckiewics.

Jim Muldoon, public relations director for the conference! did not know this morning why Buckiewlcz had been assigned to the game. Needs improvement "All the coaches seem to feel that we have to improve the officiating, and we haven't done it with three officials," said Harshman. "The question Is, The league is putting out a questionnaire right now asking the coaches, There's some feeling that there aren't enough good officials to go around. And a lot of times we wind up with no lead official. There's no one to take over and run a crew.

I've heard that, but I don't know whether it's true or not." It's true. Adding a third official has diluted the quality o(, Pac-10 officiating. There weren't many good ones to begin with, and now the good ones are surrounded by mediocrity. Oregon Stafe's Ray Blume (22) is surrounded by Washington Huskies as he looks to make a pass. i r.

Harshman pulls for OSt But with 13 minutes left Bill McShane slapped the ball away from a Husky and Mark Radford sped downcourt for a three-point play, giving the Beavers a 46-43 lead, A few minutes later the Beavers ran off a string of eight straight points a 15-foot jumper by Jeff Stoutt, four straight free throws by Johnson, then a stuff shot by Johnson and with 9:23 remaining Oregon State was in command, 56-48. Washington rallied to within 69-64 with 1:39 remaining, but the Beavers made four of five free throws In the last IVi minutes, keeping the Huskies from mounting a serious threat Miller termed his team's play, "Mediocre," and although Johnson scored 31 points and had 10 rebounds, the coach analyzed that "his second half was all right, but overall, he didn't have too good of a game." The Beavers also got 10 points and 11 rebounds from forward Tony Martin, seven assists fronr McShane and 14 points from Stoutt the sophomore sharpshooter who had beaten the Huskies with a 17-foot jumper with eight seconds remaining in Seattle. James Woods scored 14 points for Washington, Stan Walker scored 12, Andra Griffin 11, and Lorenzo Romar made six assists: "We played hard, but we made so many mistakes on offense," said Harshman. "We haven't broken down defensively this season, but offensive error! have turned the tide against us. There were a couple of spells where we were our own worst enemy.

We threw up a few garbage shots." Harshmen felt his team got a break in that OSU had played Washington State Friday night, winning 66-52, while the Huskies had a night off. Washington will finish It's Oregon trip tonight with an 8 p.m. game at Oregon. That game will be televised live on channel '12. Miller was upset that his team didn't catch up with the Huskies earlier than it did.

"We blew some very easy opportunities to (Continued on page 15) Criticises officials i Under Harshman'a ground rules, then, the Huskies had two strikes against them because (1) the Beavers were the home team, and (2) the Beavers were the better of the two teams. Harshman felt his team was at a disadvantage In the second half, when the Beavers switched to a man-to-man defense and took control of the game. "They played better In a man-to-man because they grab you and hold you," said Harshman. "Our offense Is based on the cut, and they overplay you a lot, and when you cut they grab your Jersey. If I try to go back door and you grab my jersy, and they let you get away with It, that's pretty darned effective defense.

If we could get away with It, we'd do It. too. But they're better at overplaying that any other team in this league, and they get away with It." It's the first time a coach has complained this year about the Beavers holding on. CHS girls to district ALBANY Same song, fourth verse. The Corvallis High School girls' swimming team had no trouble In rolling to its fourth consecutive District 8 championship at Albany's Community Pool Saturday.

The Spartans amassed 270 points to win 'over second-place Crescent Valley, which had 174. and fell one short of the 271 points it scored in the same meet last year. South Salem was an easy winner in the boys' competition, piling up 295 points compared to second-place Corvallis' 203. Philomath scored 88 points to take sixth place In the girls' meet, while the Warriors tallied 144 points to edge Crescent Valley (143) for third place in the boys' standings. The expectations were big for the Corvallis girls going Into the meet, And they were able to fulfill nearly all of themjin rolling to a landslide victory.

"I'd have to say they lived up to my expectations," said second-year Coach Judy Obitz. who admitted the win was better than last year's. "It a lot more satisfying than last yearAlmost eyeryorieiw to state is going and we hive a lot of people-who are capable of placing In state." Obltz is sending eight girls to the. state meet at Mt. Atuom Stat SO Washington SUte S3, Oregon SI Oregon Sutc 75, Washington 00 Stanfora S4, California 40 Today's Came Washington at Oregon By Roy Gault Sports Editor Now that he's done his part to help, Marv Harshman hopes Oregon State will go to the NCAA basketball playoffs. 1 "They're the second-best team in this league, and I hope they gei to the playoffs because they'd be our best second-place representative," the Washington coach said Saturday after the Beavers had defeated the Huskies 75-69. "I'd like to see Oregon State go over the others (Southern Cal or Washington State) because they're a better team," said Harshman. "They have better balance." Harshman backed himself up with this ex-' planation: "If they don't have the best center, they at, least have one of the best in the West (Steve Johnson). They have a lot of players who can shoot, they play good team defense, and they have good quickness.

They play better defense inside them and UCLA than anyone in the league. A lot of teams have one or two of these things, but not all of them. Southern Cal has talent that can match Oregon State, and so does Arizona State, but they don't play nearly as well as a team." So put that in your envelope, Ffalph Miller, and mail it to the NCAA selection committee. The only other way Harshman could help the Beavers now that he's lost to them twice would be to upset Southern California in Seattle on Thursday night. The Beavers 10-5) trail Southern Cal 10-4 and lead Washington State (9-5) in the Pac-10 standings; WSU has a 17-6 overall record, OSU is 17-7 and Southern Cal is 15-8.

"Washington played very well tonight," said OSU's Miller. "If they play as well as they did tonight, I think they'll have a chance against USC." If Washington State doesn't get the Trojans on Thursday, Miller is hopeful that Washington will beat them on Saturday. USC will close its Pac-10 season at home against Stanford, and California, and Miller isn't optimistic jthat either the -Cadinals or the Bears can upset the Trojans on the Trojans' home court. The Huskies came to Gill Coliseum hoping to play the role of a spoiler. "They weren't patsies, or anything like that." said OSU's Dwayne Allen.

"We squeaked by them (68-66) in Seattle, and they came here ready to knock us off. We had a lot more to lose than they did."
