The development of those coeducational institutions, both founded by members of the United Brethren Church, was closely interwovea The two historic college buildings, which fortunately have been saved and adapted for reuse, represent the very essence of Philomath's past They reflect not only the first half of the City's existence, but, also, a late 19th-century crisis within the national United Brethren Church. The Philomath College building (1101 Main Street) -today is home to the Benton County Historical Museum. The historic College of Philomath building (North 10th and Pioneer streets), currently an apartment complex, is slated for conversion to a senior center, preschool, and non-profit office space.

In 1865, focal settlers platted the City of Philomath (Greek, for lover of and then sold lots to raise money for the construction of Philomath College. It opened in 1867. The west and east wings were added to the original central structure' in 1904 and 1907, respectively. The building is one of two Philomath structures listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The College of Philomath, founded in 1889, symbolizes a doctrinal split that created dissention nationwide within the United Brethren Church.

In Philomath, faculty, students, and other local residents split into two groups- liberals and radicals. The radicals, led by former President of Philomath College James Keezel, completed the College of Philomath building in 1890. That structure burned in 1893, was rebuilt, and then burned again inl905.Today'i College of Philomath building, the third structure, was constructed in 1909, four years before the ill-fated institution closed. Philomath College bought the vacant building from its former rival in 1922, for use as the Philomath College Conservatory of Music In 1929, Philomath College, like the College of Philomath, succumbed to financial difficulties. Subsequently, the Philomath School District leased the building for an additional grade school-the "Hill The current plan is to rehabilitate the College of Philomath building, and apply for its placement in the National Register.
