That paper thinks (r) there iai' a plan matured and on foot for the; absolute subjugation of the officers of the law in and about Corvallis 1--Mercury. If all the citizens of Corvallis had been like the editor of the Mercury, on Christmas day; -when the Marshal called for assistance, ourofficers, in all probability, would have been overpowered on that day.

He took good care to get his precious car? cass out of ranse" on that occasion lie is very good at "blowing," but he is not overly anxious to smell powder." If the Gazette has misrepresented, that! day's proceedings, why don't he give his version? Licho. answers, why Newport Transportation Company The prospects of this company are very flattering, indeed. Mr. R. A.

Bensell, Secretary of the Company, called on us the first of the wei-k, while on his way to San Francisco, for the purpose of chartering a vessel for the use of the company i until next September, when their own large, and splendid schooner will be ready fcr the trade. Mr. Bensell is one of the proprietors of the Preoiier mills a live business man, and perfectly for all contracts that hemay make. In addition to his individual he represents a sound company, composed of th best and most substantial inen on the liay. The fbusinecs of this port is increashis: vCrT rabidly.

In addition to the lumber trade, agricultural advantages, mines, rod-fisheries, the bj'ster business, the coming year, promises to be better than ever before. It is for these reasons that the Newport Transportation Company resolved to char ter a vessel until their own is completed. Sustained. It is gratifying to jknow that Jhe country people of all parties, al-most sustain our officers in their attempt to enforce our city laws on Christmas and the day before. This fact, taken in connection with the decided favor which their course met from the better portion of the citizens of Corvallis, without regard to party politics, has had a wonderful influence in maintaining the supremacy of law, and nerving officers to the faithful performance of sworn duty.

Our cjty Marshal and his deputies, on that occasion, exhibited nerve, coolness, and presence ot mind, truly commendable. Had they been rash or exercised the desperate means which the law provides for extreme emergencies, like thosewhich surrounded them, there is no telling what sad results might have fol lowed! How many valuable lives would have been or'how many families made desolate Every good citizen rejoices that our officers exercised such coolness, and thus avoided that occasion but that in nowise relieves the guilty par-ties from answering in a court of justice for their rebellion -and defiance of law. The law abiding people of this community will hot submit to have such outrages passed over in silence no matter who 1 were the participants. Let this pass in silence, or without proper investigation, and no citizen's life or property is securer We have no guaranty that the protect us, and we are at once at the mercy 'of irresponsible mobs, led by bad, i designing men i Christmas at the Bat. The following communication came too late for publica- ktion last week Editor: Christmas-has beenhere," and was passed by the citizens of the Bay in participating in a free ball and supper at the Ocean House.

The dancers kept step to the music from 7 p.

The parting congratulations and huzzas of the well satisfied guests, in honor, of the proprietors of the Ocean House, as one and all took their departure, testify the appreciation of this; Bay for Case Baldwin.
